‘Breaking Bad’ Series Finale: Vince Gilligan Reveals Jesse’s Final Fate
‘Breaking Bad‘ series finale “Felina” has long since come and gone, capping the tale of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman in a much more satisfying manner than we had come to expect, though not without a few open-ended questions about the characters’ fates. And while we last left Jesse (Aaron Paul) on an apparently happy note, has series creator Vince Gilligan revealed a much more sinister fate for him following the finale?
We saw for ourselves in Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston‘s first readthrough of the finale script that Gilligan intended to leave Jesse’s fate ambiguous with a touch of optimism, describing the character’s gleeful escape from the Neo-Nazi compound as “it’s up to us to say where he’s headed. I like to call it ‘something better,’ and leave it at that.” And while Gilligan reaffirmed with GQ that “my personal feeling is that he got away,” the ‘Breaking Bad’ creator had a more realistic outlook on Jesse’s freedom, once the police found Walt’s body in the Neo-Nazi superlab:
The most likely thing, as negative as this sounds, is that they’re going to find this kid’s fingerprints all over this lab and they’re going to find him within a day or a week or a month. And he’s still going to be on the hook for the murder of two federal agents.
Fear not however, as “even though that’s the most likely outcome,” Gilligan conceded that Jesse should, and would have his happy ending after all. “The way I see it is that he got away and got to Alaska, changed his name, and had a new life. You want that for the kid. He deserves it.”
What say you? Barring any talk of Jesse Pinkman popping up in the ‘Better Call Saul‘ prequel-sequel series, do you believe the character got his happy ending after ‘Breaking Bad”s end? How would you have wanted to see Jesse and Walter’s respective stories come to a close? Relive the famous scene below, and give us your thoughts in the comments!
