One of Brandon’s finest has resigned in the wake of drug allegations and asks the public’s forgiveness for his actions.

According to a press release from the South Dakota Attorney General, 41 year-old Wayne Ellingson was indicted by a Minnehaha Grand Jury on one count of possession of a fentanyl, a controlled substance used to treat pain at a rate about 80-100 times stronger than morphine.

After the announcement from Marty Jackley, the Brandon Police Department released more details of the investigation which began back on April 13. Brandon Police soon involved the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation in the proceedings.

Sgt. Ellingson was placed on Administrative Leave on May 6 from the Department and soon after submitted his resignation from the force. The indictment was filed on May 24 and Ellingson turned himself over to authorities on May 26.

In a statement, Ellingson showed his remorse over the situation.

“I take full responsibility for my actions, which were a blatant violation of the public’s trust. I apologize to the City of Brandon, the law enforcement community and my friends/family. I want my disease of addiction to serve as a message to those still suffering in silence to ask for help before it damages their lives any further.

“I have sought help for my addiction and am closer to God for it, awaiting what His plan is for me. I hope that in time I can regain the public’s trust.”
