A boyfriend showed up at his girlfriend's apartment early Thursday morning in the 400 block of South Western Avenue in Sioux Falls. That's when violence erupted says Police Spokesman Sam Clemens.

"He had been kicked out of the building and wasn't supposed to be there. The boyfriend ended up blaming the girlfriend for that. When she opened the door, he punched her several times."

Clemens says the violence intensified.

"He strangled her and grabbed her by the hair. Then, dragged her down the hallway. The assault continued. He hit her with some different objects including some kitchen knives. One of them cut her. Eventually, he left on his own. She went to a friend who took the her to the hospital."

Clemens says police know who the suspect is but haven't found him yet.
