Bisenius Tosses Five Hit Shutout In Saltdogs’ 5-0 Win Over Canaries

SIOUX FALLS, SD -- Pitching dominated at the Birdcage Tuesday night, with Lincoln's Joe Bisenius silencing the Sioux Falls (31-63) offense over eight scoreless frames.  Kyle Ruwe of the Canaries pitched well in his own right,  but didn't have the run support or defensive help to match and the Birds fell 5-0 to Lincoln (50-44) in the series opener.

Bisenius was dominant throughout, allowing just five hits while striking out 14 and not issuing a walk. The former Philadelphia Philly and Washington National improved to 6-2 on the season.  The only jams the righthander would find himself in came in the 1st and 3rd innings.  Each inning, the Birds had two men on base via a pair of singles, but Bisenius stranded both runners each time and only allowed one more hit the rest of the way.

Steve Tinoco and AJ Kirby-Jones each finished with two hits for the Canaries.

Ruwe went the distance for the Birds and despite allowing just two earned runs, was the hard luck loser and dropped to 5-8.  Five errors led to three unearned runs and put the game out of reach given Bisenius's dominance on the other side.  Ruwe did not issue a walk and struck out four while allowing seven hits.

Lincoln's Chad Mozingo hit a solo homerun with two outs in the 3rd inning for the game's first run and the SaltDogs would add two more in the 5th on a sacrifice fly from Mike Gilmartin and an RBI single from Tyler Smith. Two unearned insurance runs came through in the 9th to lead to the final 5-0 score.

Lefty Matt Wickswat will take the ball for the Canaries on Wednesday night.
