Ballpark Food Goes Extreme, But I Long For A Simpler Time

We’re just days into the new baseball season and as is the case every year, there are plenty of changes to deal with.  Everything from old faces in new places (Robinson Cano in Seattle, Jacoby Ellsbury in New York) to new innovations (expanded replay).

But not all of the changes are happening on the field.

Some teams are rolling out some big changes at the concession stands, including  extreme ballpark food in Texas, Detroit, Tampa, and Arizona.

The Rangers have introduced bacon on a stick this season.

The Tigers are rolling out the ‘Poutine Dog’, topped with french fries, gravy, and cheese curds.

The Rays are unveiling the ‘Fan vs. Food Burger’, a 4-pound cheeseburger and a 1-pound side of fries, that will get you tickets to an upcoming game if you polish it off in one sitting.

Not to be outdone, the Diamondbacks are unleashing the ‘Boomstick’, a 24-inch hot dog drenched in chili, cheese, and other toppings.

Even the Minnesota Twins are offering new food options at Target Field this season – although nothing I would put in the ‘extreme’ category – unless you consider spicy pickles or a meatball burger as over-the-top.

But despite all of the ‘new and improved’ gut busting choices, you know what I’d like to see at the ballpark? Better hot dogs.

Nothing fancy.

Just good, old fashioned, all-beef hot dogs.  Fresh off the grill (with the markings to prove it) on a nice soft bun (no sesame seeds). Nothing boiled or steamed.  Just something that tastes like a nice, juicy hot dog, with all of the deli (not yellow) mustard and onions (raw, not grilled) I care to pile on top.

Sounds simple right?  But you’d be surprised how many places I’ve been that are cranking out inferior wieners.

Get me a decent sized beer or soft drink and I’m good.

Now before you accuse me of being unwilling to embrace change, comes my new favorite ballpark food item, courtesy the Chicago White Sox.

This season at U.S. Cellular Field you can ‘super size’ your dessert experience with a 3-pound banana split served in a full sized batting helmet.

You get four scoops of vanilla ice cream, four scoops of chocolate ice cream and strawberry ice cream. Those 12 scoops are topped with caramel, strawberry sauce and chocolate syrup, and includes two bananas, whipped cream and cherries.

The price tag is also ‘super sized’ – $17.

That’s the kind of ‘extreme’ ballpark food I can really sink my teeth into!
