SIOUX FALLS, SD -- Augustana defeated Dakota State University 13-4 on Saturday to win its 13th straight game, setting a school record for consecutive wins. Augustana's previous longest winning streak was 12 games during the 1989 season from March 23 to April 11.

Nate Hewes blasted his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field, as he went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Alex Fink finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI while Tony Viger went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

Sam Gotham earned his fifth win of the season tossing five scoreless innings giving up just two hits while striking out two. Dakota State's Michael Crain was tagged with the loss giving up five runs over three innings.

Augustana got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Tony Viger sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jake Petersen, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Petersen was hit by a pitch to lead off before he stole second base and moved up to third on a wild pitch.

Kye Winter led off the bottom of the second inning with a double down the left field line and eventually in to score on a ground out by Jack Goihl to bring the Vikings' lead to 2-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, Augustana scored two runs on three hits to extend its lead to 4-0. Petersen got himself into scoring position by stealing second after getting on base with an infield single and scored on Viger's double down the left field line. Alex Fink stepped up next and on the first pitch of the at bat singled to left field to score Viger.

The Vikings added a run in the fourth before picking up three runs on three hits in the fifth to go up 8-0. Marcus O'Neill led off the inning with a double down the right field line and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kye Winter. Hewes then hit a two-run home run to score Fink who singled with one out in the inning.

Dakota State got on the board in the top of the sixth scoring two runs on two hits and one Augustana error to make the score 8-2. The Vikings responded by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go ahead 13-2.

Brian Duxbury led off the inning with a walk and came around to score the first run of the inning on a single by Petersen after he stole second and third base. With runners on second and third, Viger grounded out to shortstop to score Petersen. Fink drove in a run with a single before Hewes sent a two-RBI double to center field.

Dakota State pushed two more runs across in the top of the seventh to make the score 13-4, which would be the final.

Eric Docken and Joran Clute combined to throw two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth innings to hold the win for the Vikings.

Augustana returns to action Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader against Morningside College beginning at noon at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field.
