Augustana Comes Up Short In Slugfest With Southeastern Oklahoma State
SIOUX FALLS, SD — No. 23 Augustana scored 12 runs and hit five home runs but came up short in a 13-12 loss against Southeastern Oklahoma State University in the opening game of a best-of-three series in the NCAA Central Super Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Vikings got five home runs from five different players, including a grand slam from Carly Peterson in the loss.
Augustana (46-14) will now face elimination as the two teams will take the field for game two at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Bowden Field. Both teams had an answer for each other all day but a five-run fifth inning helped the Savage Storm (42-18) come out on top. Augustana is the No. 4 seed in the Central Region Tournament, Southeastern Oklahoma State is the No. 7 seed.
Both teams had the bats going with two outs in the inning this afternoon. Two of Southeastern Oklahoma’s 13 runs were scored with less than two outs while Augustana scored all but one of its 12 runs with two outs.
Augustana and Southeastern Oklahoma combined for 25 hits on the day with the Savage Storm finishing the day with 14. Four Vikings’ had multiple hits in the game led by Mackenzie Alstott who finished 2 for 3 with three runs scored.
Sarah Kennedy finished 2 for 4 with an RBI double and a run scored while Peterson finished the day 2 for 4 with a career-high five RBI finishing with an RBI single and a grand slam home run.
Southeastern Oklahoma State used three pitchers in the contest with Shayna Milam earning the victory in the circle for the Savage Storm. Milam threw five innings and struck out two batters while giving up two runs on three hits for her seventh victory of the season. Augustana chased Mindy McElroy from the game in the bottom of the second inning after scoring seven runs on seven hits off the Southeastern Oklahoma State starter.
Jenelle Trautmann was hit with the loss for the Vikings falling to 27-7 after allowing 12 runs on 12 hits while striking out four. Carley Pickett came into the game in relief and tossed 2.1 innings while giving up just one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Trautmann pitched around a leadoff single in the top of the first inning getting a strikeout a popout and a groundout to strand a runner on first base. She then gave Augustana its first lead of the game with a two-out two-run home run in the bottom of the second putting her team in front 2-0.
Alstott reached on a bunt single and stole second to get into scoring position with Kennedy at the plate and she fouled out down the left field line to bring up Trautmann with two outs in the first. Trautmann then sent a 2-1 pitch into the pine trees in left field for her 19th home run of the season which is a new single season record at Augustana.
Southeastern Oklahoma State came out in the top of the second and scored seven runs on six hits and two Augustana errors to go in front 7-2. All seven runs were scored with two outs and the big blow came on a three-run home run by Laramie Beal extending her team’s lead from 4-2 to 7-2.
The Vikings answered right back with eight runs of their own all with two outs in the bottom of the second to take a 10-7 lead. Mindy McElroy looked to make quick work of the Vikings in the bottom of the second getting two outs on two pitches but Jordan Schaffer started the two-out rally with a solo home run off the scoreboard in center field, her 13th of the season, cutting Southeastern Oklahoma’s lead to four at 7-3. Maddie Merriam followed with a single and Caitlin Nichol blasted her 13th homer of the season to bring the Vikings within two at 7-5.
Alstott then picked up her second single up the game with a sharp slap through the left side of the infield and Kennedy drove her in with a double to deep center field to make it 7-6. Trautmann was then intentionally walked and Lindsay Spanton was hit by a pitch loading the bases for Peterson who picked a great time for her first home run of the season. Peterson drilled a grand slam to left center to give the Vikings a 10-7 lead heading into just the top of the third inning.
Both teams went scoreless in the third inning going three-up and three-down but Southeastern Oklahoma State got a solo home run from Simmons with one out in the top of the fourth to bring her team within two at 10-8.
Augustana answered right back in the bottom of the fourth inning pushing its lead back up to three as Peterson drove in her fifth run of the game with an RBI single up the middle to drive in Alstott, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, putting the Vikings in front 11-8.
Southeastern Oklahoma State went on to score five runs on five hits in the top of the fifth inning to take its second lead of the game at 13-11. The Vikings picked up their fifth home run of the afternoon on a solo shot by Merriam with one out in the fifth to make the score 13-12, where it would stay as a final. Augustana put a threat together in the top of the sixth after Kennedy singled to center and moved up to second base on the play after the center fielder ran past the ball allowing her to move up a base. Kennedy was not able to get beyond second base after two fly outs and a strikeout to end the inning by Milam.
Augustana’s five home runs marks the 11th time this season the Vikings have hit three or more home runs in a game. Augustana’s season-high for home runs in a game this season is seven.
Game two will get underway at Bowden Field in Sioux Falls at 12 p.m. Saturday.
