A 40 year-old-Marty, South Dakota man faces charges in connection with the sexual assault of a woman.  The suspect was identified as Michael Wayne Williams.

According to Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens, the incident began Tuesday night when Williams allegedly punched and strangled his ex-girlfriend at the Rushmore Motel.  She got away from him and went to an apartment.  Williams later showed up at the apartment and the victim didn't feel comfortable leaving.  Clemens says Williams ended up sexually assaulting her.

Early Thursday the victim was able to get away from Williams. A friend took her to a hospital where police were notified.

Later, Williams made threats to harm himself and refused to come out of the apartment.  A SWAT team and crisis negotiators were activated and they were able to talk Williams into coming out peacefully.  He was taken into custody without incident.

Williams has been charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, second degree rape, kidnapping and possession of control substances.
