Sioux Falls Police and Metro Communications are taking applications for their "Citizens' Academy," which begins in mid-January.

Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says the Academy will include training in topics such as police patrol procedures, K-9 operations, crime scene processing, crime prevention, and investigative methods of fraud, narcotics, theft and assaults.

Clemens says one session will involve the firearms range, and participants will also be allowed to ride with an officer on patrol.

Metro Communications, now part of the Citizens' Academy, will make presentations on their work and the functions of the 911 Center.

Clemens says classes will be held on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. for ten weeks at the Law Enforcement Center,at 320 West Fourth Street.

The 2014 session begins January 16, 2014, and ends March 20.

Class size is limited, and the minimum age to participate is 18. The deadline to apply is Thursday, December 12, 2013.
