Ady and Bekah Hauert

The following is from Ady’s caringbridge site. I wanted to use it in this week’s blog to give everyone an idea of what these little ones go through from the beginning. It is hard to go back and read alot of these things, but it also brings me joy in our case because I can see how far we have come…

Well, we got to talk to Ady’s doctor today about the test results from Monday. The tests showed that she has cancer in her right hip, spinal column, both thigh bones, 2 spots in her lower right leg, and in her spleen. Her chest, abdomen, liver, and belly all looked good which is obviously a good thing.

Tomorrow begins our first phase of chemo. The first phase is going to be 5 weeks long, and they said it is probably going to be the hardest part of the chemo process. They are going to blast her pretty good with treatment right away. Her chemo will involve 2 different kinds of meds – through her IV, oral meds, prednazone, shots in her legs, and possibly shots into her spinal column, depending on how her spinal tap comes back tomorrow. She will lose her hair within the first week-2 weeks. She will be very moody, hungry, and irritable due to the high dose of steroids she will be on. After tomorrow we should know how long she will be getting chemo and what the long term treatment plan is for her. We will meet with her doctor tomorrow and have a long talk about what all to expect in the next couple of years. We will be admitted tomorrow to the hospital and will for sure be there over the weekend, and hopefully be home next week, depending on how she does with chemo.

This is going to be a long road for all of us. Ady is going to go through a lot of stuff that most adults wouldn’t even want to go through, but she is a strong little girl, and we know she will continue to be. Asher is also going to have a hard time with this, as they are very good friends, and he doesn’t even like it when she goes to school for an afternoon. We are going to try to keep things as normal as possible for him, but I’m sure he will quickly learn that things are not quite right with sissy. Please continue to pray for all of us, especially the little ones in our family, as this is such a hard age for them to be going through this.

Tonight we are going to go out to eat as a family and enjoy our time together one last time before little Ady starts to not feel so good. She loves Red Lobster (although she only gets chicken anyways) so I’m sure that will be where we go.

WOW! Looking back now, almost two years later, to think we are almost at the end of her chemo journey brings me so much joy, but there are still many years of tests and scans ahead for her. There are also SO many other kids who are yet to be diagnosed, and SO many little ones still fighting. It’s hard to think, but will one of those kids be yours? I NEVER thought in a million years I would hear the words “your child has cancer,” but I did. Please join us in fighting this fight, for all the kids out there, for your kid, and for my little Ady! Make sure and join in April 4 & 5 for the Results Radio Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon!
