The 24th annual GLAAD Media Awards (not to be confused with the plain old GLAAD Awards) were held on Saturday night, May 11, during which gay rights activist and 'American Idol' alum Adam Lambert was honored with the prestigious Davidson/Valentini Award.

Named after GLAAD’s first executive director, Craig Davidson, and his partner, Michael Valentini, the award is given to openly LGBT media personalities who've promoted “equality for the gay community.”

Lambert attended the event with his proud mama, Leila Lambert, and received the award from Spice Girl Mel B. His acceptance speech was funny, heartfelt, and slightly expletive-ridden.

"One person thinks you should be more this, one person thinks you should be more that," he said. "The label thinks this, the fans think that; your family wishes this; this community wants you to shut up, that community wants it louder; the conservatives, the liberals ..."

"Whaddaya want from me?" he sang, perhaps in reference to the brouhaha that erupted last month when the publisher of the South Florida Gay News threw shade at him for saying he wasn't deserving of the GLAAD award.

"The best we can do is keep it real, and to spread a message of acceptance," Lambert added. "If we can inspire even one person to open their mind or another to be who they want to be, whether they are gay, straight, old, young, man, woman, black, or white, then it's worth being objectified by the sometimes frustrating world of media sensationalism."

Adam also tied with singer Frank Ocean for Outstanding Musical Artist at the award show.

Next up: Lambert will duet with ousted 'Idol' contestant Angie Miller during the show's season finale on May 16.
