It's the season of giving, but for con artists it's the season of taking and consumers have to be wary.

Sarah Jennings, the state director of AARP South Dakota, says through the AARP's Fraud Watch Network the group has developed some tools designed to outsmart these cammers. She says, for example, there are fake shopping websites to be aware of.

"Scammers are smart and very creative. We have heard there are some scammers that will actually develop a website that looks very similar to a legitimate website," said Jennings. "And so you think you are shopping at the place you were expecting to go but in fact you are giving your credit card number to a con artist."

Jennings says a guide to avoiding this type of scam can be found on the AARP website.
