Minutes after convicted murderer Donald Moeller was executed in the South Dakota State Penitentiary Tuesday night, I spoke one on one with Tina Curl---the mother of Moeller's victim: 9 year old Becky O'Connell.

When asked what her message was to the people protesting the death penalty, Curl responded “Hope it don’t happen to you.  If it does, maybe it will change your mind.”

For Curl, the death of her daughter changed her life forever.

“It ruined my life. He took one thing from me that meant so much to me,” explained Curl. "I grieve for Becca every day.”

Curl says Moeller watched her daughter take her last breath, and she wanted to watch him take his.

Outside the Penitentiary walls, Lanny of Sioux Falls was among the people holding a vigil against the death penalty.

"I don't feel that as a Christian that's what we're supposed to do.  That's our Christian teaching.  You're not supposed to kill people."

State Attorney General Marty Jackley witnessed the execution.

"Certainly the men and women of the Department of Corrections have carried out the state's court sentence in a very humane manner. There was no evidence of any pain or suffering. I believe justice has been carried out in relation to Donald Moeller."

Moeller kidnapped O'Connell from a Sioux Falls convenience store in May 1990, then raped and stabbed her.  Her naked body was found the next day near the Big Sioux River.
