UMKC Eliminates Coyotes At Summit League Championships
FARGO, ND — Kansas City’s Deanna Friese (13-12) tossed a one-hit shutout as the Kangaroos defeated South Dakota 2-0 at the Ellig Sports Complex on Friday. The loss ends the season for the Coyotes (29-20, 12-7 Summit League).
Erica Denney (17-8) went the distance on the mound for USD, allowing six hits while striking out one.
UMKC’s (18-26, 6-7 Summit League) Chelsea Hartwig hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning to open the scoring. She ignited the ‘Roo offense two innings later with a two out double. Kristi Lee pinch ran for Hartwig and scored on a single to left field by Alexandra Friloux, pushing the score to its eventual final of 2-0.
South Dakota loaded the bases twice but failed to score each time. In the top of the first Lindsey Boyd, Allie Daly and Morgan Hancock all walked but Friese was able escape the jam with a strikeout.
In the fourth inning a hit from Morgan Hancock and walks of Lindsey Broders and Katie Cochran again loaded things up, but the ‘Yotes were unable to capitalize.
