ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - One of the largest churches in South Dakota is getting a roof renovation.

The $335,000 project at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen began late last month. The American News reports that about 60 percent of the steep, slate roof on the Gothic Tudor church will be upgraded.

The Rev. Shane Stevens says $200,000 of the cost is being paid by the church's insurance company to cover water, hail and ice damage. The congregation is raising the rest of the money.

The church was built in 1933 under the assumption it could one day become a cathedral for a new diocese. That never happened, as the population shifted more toward Sioux Falls.
