The song for 5 Seconds to Cash for Tuesday December 18, 2018 was "1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins.

There was no winner today so the jackpot will go to $40 tomorrow!

"1979" was the biggest crossover single the Pumpkins ever had. It was #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock and Alternative Songs charts. It peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. It was the only song they ever had that appeared on the Mainstream Top 40 chart where it peaked at #10.

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, the album "1979" was on, debuted at #1 on November 11, 1995. In a review that appeared in Rolling Stone Jim Derogatis mentions that frontman Billy Corgan claimed that the album would be Gen X's The Wall. As a member of that generation I can say it isn't quite as significant as the Pink Floyd classic, but it is one of my favorites.

Much like the Pumpkins concert I attended here in Sioux Falls on August 21, 2018Mellon Collie was longer than it needed to be. It was a 2-disc album on CD and a 3-records on vinyl. It sold nearly 5 million copies.
